Graded Cards Explained

Graded cards are trading cards sealed in a hard plastic slab by a grading company. The slab shows a grade, a cert number, and usually the card name and set. Collectors buy graded cards for protection, authenticity, and clearer market value.

At ShinyCardboard4U we mainly stock PSA, ACE Grading, and CGC slabs. Here is a plain guide to what each means and how to shop them on our site.

What the grade means

Grades usually run from 1 to 10. Higher is better. Exact labels vary by company, but roughly:

  • 10 - Gem Mint / perfect or near-perfect under their rules
  • 9 - Mint / excellent with tiny flaws under magnification
  • 8 - Near Mint-Mint / strong copy with light wear
  • 7 and below - more visible wear, still collectible depending on the card

Always check the photos of the exact slab. Two PSA 10s of the same card can still look different.

PSA

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the best-known grader worldwide. Many buyers recognise PSA labels quickly, which helps if you resell later.

PSA slabs show the grade, a cert number, and card details on the label. You can look up the cert on PSA's site to confirm it matches the card in the case.

ACE Grading

ACE Grading is a UK-based grader popular with Pokémon and TCG collectors here. ACE slabs are common in UK shops and often price competitively against the same card in a PSA holder.

ACE grades also use a numeric scale with clear labels such as Gem Mint. As with any grader, buy the card and photos you can see - not only the number.

CGC

CGC grades trading cards as well as comics and other collectibles. CGC Pokémon and TCG slabs are widely traded and use a numeric grade with a distinct label style.

CGC cert numbers can be verified on CGC's lookup tools. Check edges, labels, and centering in the photos before you buy.

PSA vs ACE vs CGC

There is no single right answer. Pick based on the card, the price, and what you want the slab for:

  • Maximum name recognition / easier resale abroad? PSA often wins
  • Strong UK TCG value and sharp pricing? ACE is frequently a great buy
  • A well-known alternative slab with solid market support? CGC fits well

For personal collections, buy the nicest example you can afford in the grader you like. For investment-minded buys, compare recent sales of the same card in each slab - the grade number alone is not the whole story.

Quick tips before you buy

  • Match the cert number on the label to the listing
  • Look at front and back photos, not only the grade
  • Compare similar sold prices for that grader and grade
  • Language matters - Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean cards are different markets
